What Was Popular Yesterday...
"Lovefool" is a pop song by the Cardigans, a Swedish band, which became a sensation in the United States as well as in England in 1996 and 1997. The lyrics are simple and easy to understand. The repetition of imperatives "Love me, Love me/Say that you love me/Fool me, Fool me/Go on and fool me" in the chorus is all that this song is about. The word choice in the lyrics is basic and easy to remember, but along with the slow pleasant music creates a positive effect on a listener.

"The Sign" is another popular hit from the 90s by Ace of Base, another Swedish band. The song reached the top positions in more than fifteen countries globally. In the United States, it got to the first place on the Billboard Hot 100. Although the lyrics look wordy, they are simple. The band uses common words and phrases like "I saw a sign," "under the clear moon" or "opened up my eyes," all of which have an implication of an awakening from a bad relationship. The music also starts slowly, but then adds some beats.

Is Not Popular Today...
"Wake me up," a song by a Swedish DJ Avicii, seems to be effective in waking up every American this year. This new song by Avicii took the world by storm. It was in the first place on the music charts in many countries: Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Netherlands, and many other countries. In the United States, it came in first on the U.S. Pop Songs, Hot Dance Club Songs Billboards and in forth position on the Billboard Hot 100. The first thing you notice is the country music adaptations which are covered by a distinctly American voice. The lyrics were written by a vocalist Aloe Blacc, as the song did not have "real lyrics" (Wikipedia).
The song, which was created by a Swedish twenty-four-year-old DJ, clearly indicates American influences and bespeaks its purpose, which was to target those poor American souls who are not indifferent to country/club music. The song is about youth, self-discovery and life. "Don't you worry child" is the last song in the career of the Swedish House Mafia. It landed in the sixth place on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and in the first place on the U.K Singles charts. The song is about the glory of the past and unnecessary worry about the future. In the chorus, the reassuring "Don't you worry, don't you worry child/See heaven's got a plan for you" is best part of the song, where we take a break from the fast beats of this electronic dance hit.

"1901" is a song by a French band Phoenix, which was released in 2009 and made its way to the Late Show with David Letterman and Saturday Night Live. The song topped the U.S. Alternative Songs Billboard that year. Although the lyrics are in English, they don't seem to have any real meanings to the audience. There is no storyline, just some implications about
past and future Paris. The lyrics are quite nonsensical and cryptic (Rob Sheffield). It is the music which gets under our skin with smooth predominately guitar sounds.

It got to the first place in the Top 100 songs on Z-100 and the fourth on the Top 50 songs of 2012 on the KTU radio stations in New York. In the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, it reached the seventh position. The song is about an indestructible nature of the person's character and spirit: "I am bulletproof/Nothing to lose.../I am a titanium." The song has the elements of pop and club music.
