The Advantages of Learning a New Language
How do you react when there are people around you speaking a language you don’t know? Well, in my case, I feel limited. I want not only to understand what they are saying, but deep inside me, I want to be able to speak that language. During 2013, I was able to visit different countries in Europe, one of these being the beautiful Iceland. Their language is fascinating and very different to what I had hear before. To be honest, I did not understand a word of what they said. It is fair to say that it is one of the most ancient languages in the world and only a small population speak it. My frustration was massive; I wanted to speak the language without having to use English as my savior. I feel like knowing another language gives me a certain power. I wonder if everyone considers the ability to speak more than one language is as valuable as I do.
In New York City, most of the people are from somewhere else. People from Latin-American, Europe, Asia, Africa, and all around the world come to this city. Thanks to this, most people in NYC speak a second language with English a second language.
In my research, I will analyze the importance of knowing more than one language and the importance people give to it. I want to focus not only on the education system, but also in the labor area. I will include data of graduated students who know more than one language and will interview three professionals explaining the effect of knowing a second language in their career.
