What Defines Us Make Us Stronger
Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a Colombian writer who was awarded Nobel Prize in Literature. When I was 13 years old, I was introduced to his amazing work. It was my Spanish class in middle school where the professor assigned a book of Garcia Marquez to be read. The book is called The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor and it tells the wonderful story of a sailor who was washed overboard and survived thanks to a raft and his imagination. This was the first time I experienced to be somewhere else, without moving from my seat. It is even hard to believe it was not me in that raft.
Marquez's writing style sets a model to all my future writing. His writing is simple, yet interesting and full of details. It can transport you to the location of the story in the first sentence of the tale. Even though he does speak about social and political issues, this is not his focus, or at least he doesn’t do it that obvious. For me, that is very important, because when I buy a book and take the time to read it, it is because the story called my attention, not the author's political complaints. His subtle way of presenting a conflict is impeccable and since I started reading his work, it is a motivation to do the same.
When I was 6 years old, my family departed to another country, leaving behind grandparents, aunts, cousins, and friends. This was a event that shaped my identity as a writer as well. Not only the fact of being separated from important people in my life, but also the influence of this new country. This changes make me a very critical writer, which is not a bad thing, but as Garcia Marquez, I try to be objective and subtle in my writing presentation.
To be able to transport a person to a fictional place is a powerful tool, and that is exactly what I want to do every time I write. It can be a poem, a short story or a text message. How amazing it is to describe, for example, a pen in five pages! What can you write about? Are you able to bring a person to a empty space where there is only a pen and nothing else? Well, that is the power of writing.
My writing goal is to keep a honest writing style, full of life and concreteness for a person who reads my work for first time to be able to get into my mind and see the same images I had when I was writing that piece. At the same time, I don’t want the reader to be more interested in me as an author than the story itself. My voice, points of view about politics, religions or anything else should be well addressed, yes, but deeper than that is for a memoir. My writing should be just a transportation device to unbelievable places and unimaginable emotions.
There is a very special kind of writing that I passionately enjoy, lyrics. The combination of words with music have an incredible power to move you in every way you can think of. An example of this are the unforgettable Abba's songs.

Dancing Queen
This is one of many songs that with it lyrics transport me to the space of action. Enjoy it and travel with me to this place!
Didn't want you to dance at the compass of this song? I am sure you did. When I listen to this lyric, I imagine myself in comfy shoes, natural-free hair down, in a Greek island, having the "time of my life". One day, I will do it for real, but for now the power of the words of this song take me right there every time I want, even if I am in a cold winter night in my New York City apartment. Of course sometimes I feel more like the talented Alicia Keys and Jay Z greatly delivered about the feeling of those of us who are part of "Such a meting pot" City.
Empire State of Mind
Come to my city and see its beauty through this popular song
I believe that what make us stronger is what move our emotions and our desires. It is incredible to think that a writing have such power, and that we all can manage that powerful tool in beautiful, creative ways. I am very lucky to be able to enjoy reading and writing in a extreme way, and I have to thanks those factors that defined me, they definitely made me stronger and grateful.
My wish for the future is to keep absorbing all the influence I can from talented, avant-garde individuals from all around the world. These is what makes me stronger, and I can't have enough of it.
